With international accolades from her recent tour of Portugal, Spain, Jordan and Turkey with the Stanley Baird Group, smooth jazz vocalist, Yolanda Rabun released "So Real", the first track from her full-length project entitled "So
Real" .
The smooth jazz single, “So Real”,
highlights Yolanda’s style, talent and skill. The song is about how genuine and
true a person’s love is for another. “So Real” is soulful,
sultry, smooth jazz at its finest. Yolanda’s vocals are crisp, powerful, soft –
it exudes drama all on its own. The instrumentation, especially the piano, is
subtle adding a taste of elegance and Stanley Baird’s brilliant saxophone
accents takes “So Real” into a different realm. In fact, the alto
sax expresses its own voice – almost taking on a human identity. The rhythm is
romantic and sexy. Real cool, smooth jazz…perfection.
No matter which song Yolanda is singing from the “So Real” project, Yolanda takes every lyric and melody she
is involved with to heart. Her renditions are superb, full of passion, packed
with emotion and sung with a velvety tone from the depths of her soul. Yolanda
Rabun’s new smooth jazz single, “So Real”, is a captivating love
song which is classy and very appealing with background harmonies which include
Yolanda that are gripping and memorable.
Yolanda first appeared on the smooth jazz scene on Stanley Baird's project,
Traffic Jam with the smooth jazz single, I want to 2 Love you, in 1997.

Yolanda Rabun is a throwback artist of sorts. She strives to have
her music heard by the masses on a global level, but unlike a number of
artists today, she’s willing to put in the hard work required to make it
happen. And as you may have guessed, the Atlanta native is no newbie
to the music industry. Yolanda Rabun has been singing and touring both
the country and world since she was a grade school student, and she’s
armed with poise, grace, showmanship and pure, natural born talent --
all the required tools to make a name for herself and leave a lasting
impression on her audience.
Rabun wears multiple music hats, and as the lead vocalist for the
Stanley Baird Group, she’s already garnered an international following,
so it was just a matter of time before Rabun released her own album.
People around the world were waiting to hear her solo music effort, and
Rabun isn’t one to keep her audience waiting.
With the release of her debut CD, So Real, Yolanda Rabun is
ready to make you see things her way. The album offers some personal
insight into the mind, soul and life of Rabun, and every note she sings
conveys her mood, her thoughts and, most importantly, her feelings.
Rabun goes for a soulful jazz sound here that’s reminiscent of Dianne
Reeves in the 80’s. It’s a mellow sound that both grooves and soothes
you, and Rabun’s voice adds a decided flavor to her rich music gumbo.
The title track offers a peek into what is the come with So Real,
with its jazzy flair powered by Rabun’s sensuous vocals. “Dreaming” is
full tilt soulful jazz that changes pace and texture to give the song
an added appeal. Rabun even does Beyonce and Destiny’s Child a favor by
covering “Say My Name,” giving the song musical weight and making the
lyrics seem more real and less immature than the original. “The Good
Wife” is a sultry number dedicated to the sanctity of marriage. On
“Just Believe,” Rabun goes a bit up-tempo and stretches out a bit while
still holding strong to her jazzy sound. The beauty of So Real
is the live instrumentation. There is no drum programming, loops or
samples to cheapen the soulful jazz sound of the album; the music ebbs
and flows with Yolanda Rabun’s vocals, creating a definitive sound her
music lovers can appreciate.
Overall, So Real is just that: an album that’s real
lyrically, vocally and musically. Yolanda Rabun expects nothing less of
herself as an artist, and she makes a point to share herself with you
musically in a way that you can appreciate. If you dig an artist who is
unafraid to show you an intimate side, then Yolanda Rabun is just what
the doctor ordered. Highly Recommended.

Need something to chill out to this Christmas? If so look no further than this tender track from rising contemporary jazz artist Yolanda Rabun. Her brand new album ‘So Real’ is really getting some attention and this fabulous radio single of the same name makes it easy to see why...For Yolanda, 2012 promises to be a great year so check out her music now!

2011's been a good year for albums from female soul and jazz singers.
Even the most cursory of glances at our review pages will confirm this.
What makes albums from ladies like newcomers Veronica Ferreiro, Dara
Tucker, Nicci Canada, Tasha Taylor and old stagers like Maysa, Mary J
Blige and the iconic Etta James so welcoming is their sense of
adventure... the ladies' determination to try something a little
different – and this new 11 tracker from Yolanda Rabun has the same
controlled, artistic audacity.
Thoroughly modern Yolanda is a real multi-tasker. A graduate of
Atlanta's famed Northside School Of The Arts, she's worked with the late
Isaac Hayes and opened for Jennifer Holiday. She also has a law degree
from Boston College and when time permits she works as a corporate
attorney. If that's not enough she's also an in-demand actor! Music
though has always been her priority and jazz and soul her preferred
genres. She possesses a warm, clear, engaging voice that's outstanding
on ballads like 'I Will Be Loved Tonight' and 'My True Love' (a hint of
Anita Baker about that one, by the way) and it's perfect for the gentle,
almost Latin rhythms of the LP's title cut. She takes flight on the
builder that is 'Only In Mind' (a Sadao Watanabe tune, by the way) while
on the album's big cover (the audacious element we alluded to up top)
Yolanda's a revelation. The song in question here is Destiny's Child's
'Say My Name'. Always a good song (well, with seven writer credits it
should be!), Yolanda transforms the teen angst anthem into a mature,
dramatic, bumpy ride with rock ballad overtones towards the end and it
stands in stark contrast to what immediately follows – the
superficially gentle, soporific and reflective 'The Good Wife'.
Throughout the album, Yolanda's supported by a superb live band (the
keys from Chris Evans and Stanley Baird's sax work are outstanding).
There's a real organic feel to proceedings and those who like their
music mature and real should investigate @ www.yolandarabun.com
(BB) 4/5

One of those records that really grabs us right away – a contemporary
soul set, but one with the depth of a classic from the late 70s – thanks
partly to heartfelt vocals from Yoland Rabun, but also to some
impeccable production that's right on the money! The record's got a way
of getting smooth, yet still having a nice tight punch – a blend that's
somewhere in the neighborhood of mid 70s Earth Wind & Fire, with a
similar strength of jazzy instrumentation in the mix! Rabun's vocals
push things, and really stretch out – making for a nice counterpoint to
the well-hewn backings, on titles that include "Dreaming", "My True
Love", "Marry You Again", "Set For Life", "The Good Wife", and "Say My
Name".

Sonic Soul -
YOLANDA RABUN “So Real” (Yodyful)
Bewährtes
Programm.
„So
ihrer Seite versammeln, deren Berechtigung nun vollends untermauert. „So
Debut zieren durfte). Bewährt eben – und gut obendrein.
Wertung: 7,5/10
Translation:
A successful program. In her main professional life, Yolanda Rabun is a
successful lawyer. But even her constant quest for law and order did not
put her deep down longings to sleep. She had to be on stage, under the
spotlights. "So Real" and always there. And it was bound to happen. Mrs Rabun’s talents could not be hidden for long, various engagements had her travelling around the world, to Broadway and the White House. She is the full blown entertainer. And she is offering us now soul and jazz in their nicest combination. As the singer of the band with Sax player Stanley Baird she did already gain some stars, which now are fully deserved. “So Real” combines all the styles together in an almost perfect balance, but without that polished niceness that would lead to the listener becoming bored.
Rabun rather prefers to add to her repertoire a certain roughness that invites the instruments coming into full play/sound. The guitar is allowed to play a lusty solo, and while Baird and friends contribute their piece of jazz, the stage goddess positions herself clearly on the soul side of life. The songs were selected accordingly – in addition to the self composed smooth sounds (the title song of the beginning allows a perfect start into a softly swinging groove), there is a a selection ranging from mellow jazz (among others from Sadao Watanabe), to popular R&B songs (Destiny´s Child „Say My Name“ in a brand new style) or even almost forgotten highlites (Dreaming, showcasing Kuh Ledesmas early career).
Proven and tested -- and good on top of it.

Singer, actress Yolanda Rabun has released the debut single for her forthcoming CD entitled “So Real.” The track is a nod back to the days of MFSB and Jean Carne or Phyllis
Hyman and Norman Conners. This release belongs in that same category of
Sophisticated Soul. The voice of Rabun is accompanied by the Stanley Baird Group, whom she fronts. The mood is a slow groove and a mixture of Neo Soul and Smooth Jazz. You will like “So Real”.

Yolanda Rabun's debut CD, "So Real" speaks to both a jazz and
soul audience, but in different languages. The singer/songwriter speaks
the language of love in jazzy and soulful style. But it's in the way she
speaks that language; or better yet, the way she conveys love in all languages
that sets her signature style on the album. Rabun uses textures and hues
in broad strokes, often accentuating bright colors, both vocally and musically.
The Raleigh, North Carolina resident's CD has been a long time coming.
Rabun has been touring and performing since her high school days, singing
with the Showbiz Kids in Europe and Japan. These days, Yolanda is mostly
known as the lead vocalist for the Stanley Baird Group. With the release
of "So Real", however, Yolanda Rabun is carving her own path
jazzy/soul song for jazzy/soul song.
"So Real" is an album that's in a long line on contemporary jazz
albums that incorporate R&B and soul. Yolanda keeps a high standard with
her music, however; there's not really a weak song on the CD, not even her
cover of the Destiny's Child tune "Say My Name". It's tough to polish
a jaded rock, but Rabun gives her best effort, and thank goodness, she's not
emulating Beyonce's vocal style, but rather bringing a sultry approach to a
lyrically shallow song. Sultry is a word you'll think of often with this album.
The title track gets you in the mood with Stanley Baird's signature saxophone
style.
"Dreaming" is an up-tempo jazzy/soul tune that features a grooving
bass line and, well, grooves. "Just Believe" takes the up-tempo
R&B/soul style a step higher, with a synthesized bass line and groove that
harkens the early 90's style at the very least. On songs like "The Good
Wife" and "Only In My Mind", Rabun utilizes a contemporary jazz
style that features her sultry vocals. The jazz is light on most all of the
songs, but heavy enough for you to notice and feel its influence on the album.
Rabun weaves her life-love experiences in each song, giving you positive, but
realistic lyrics that anyone that's ever been through the breakup/makeup thing can
relate to.
My guess is that you'll be hearing more from Yolanda Rabun in the near future. "So Real" has already garnered attention in some music circles; I
suspect that circle will expand as time goes on. The album is definitely worth
checking out. If you're looking for a strong CD that's intelligent musically,
vocally, and lyrically, than "So Real" is for you.

Friends of the arts gather to back Arts Mission
The Herald Sun
07.30.11 - 03:36 pm
Enriching lives through the arts" is the slogan for Arts Mission, a summer arts camp offering students the opportunity to train with renowned artists in a clinic environment in both singing and dancing.
Based in Durham, this year the camp began a week ago today and ended Saturday.
My week began on Monday with a special Arts Mission event, the CD release
concert for Yolanda Rabun. The event, which was held at the Durham School
of the Arts, was also a fundraiser for the organization.
Rabun is no stranger to stages around the Triangle. From Playmakers Repertory
Theatre in Chapel Hill to Burning Coal Theatre in Raleigh, her résumé reads
like that of a seasoned actress. At the same time, her gift of singing
reached a new height with the solo project, "So Real."
Performing with the Stanley Baird Group as her band, Rabin also collaborated
with many of the band members for the CD project. Baird, a jazz musician,
is also no stranger to many music lovers throughout the Triangle. Though
the Stanley Baird Group can be seen often performing throughout North Carolina,
the band has also graced stages throughout the world.
In January, they entertained troops in Portugal, Turkey and Jordan. Both
camp participants as well as music fans packed the auditorium of the Durham
School of the Arts. Arts Mission's camp director Annette Layman has known
Rabun for several years which is how the collaboration began. She said
that Rabun had performed for the camp in the past and the event on Monday
marked her third year as a performer.
As guests arrived, they had a chance to find out more information about
Arts Mission as well as make donations. At the top of the program, there
was a brief welcome before Rabun made her grand entrance. Rabun performed
several songs from her CD, and talked to the audience throughout the performance
about how the songs came to be a part of the project.
In true diva fashion, Rabun made a wardrobe change and made her second entrance
from the back of the auditorium. During the band's performance and Rabun's
wardrobe change, audience members had a unique experience. The background
singers made their way from the stage and took pictures of people across the
auditorium, likely as a memento of the special affair.
At concert's end, supporters had a chance to purchase the enhanced CD,
which included a copy of the video for the title song, "So Real."Rabun
posed with her fans and autographed the CD. Dawn and Tony Johnson of Durham
were on hand and heard Rabun perform for the first time. Tony Johnson has
known Rabun for years as a customer as he has worked on her photos in the
past.
The Johnsons thought the show was great and had only praise for the
performance.
Emelia "MeMe" Cowans and LeDawna Akins, know Rabun from the work that the three of them have done together in musical theater. Atkins shared that it was appropriate that the CD was titled "So Real" as that describes Rabun in her work as a positive professional.
After listening to the concert, Cowans, who has known Rabun for years, added
that the love and passion that she (Rabun) put into the project was quite
event. "'So Real' is just as amazing as she is," Cowans added.

Rabun takes a different role on new album
The Herald Sun
07.21.11 - 08:58 pm
By Cliff Bellamy
cbellamy@heraldsun.com; 419-6744
DURHAM -- Music listeners probably know Yolanda Rabun as the singer with
The Stanley Baird Group. Or they may know her for her many acting roles
with local theater companies, such as "Drift" and "Ain't
Misbehavin'," productions of The Kennedy Theatre of Raleigh.
On her new CD "So Real," Rabun takes on a different role, as
songwriter, collaborator and interpreter of songs, with lots of help and
collaboration from the Baird Group.
Rabun has recorded previously -- including a solo tribute to President Reagan
arranged by Isaac Hayes ("That was very scary," she said.).
"This is the first time I've been in the forefront," Rabun said in a
phone interview. "I was able to pick the songs that were done. … This is a
memorialization of God's gift to me," she said.
One of the 11 compositions on "So Real" reflects her theater
background -- an arrangement of Jeremy Schonfeld's "The Good Wife,"
which Rabun also sang in "Drift."
Rabun wrote the title song and co-wrote three others -- "Just
Believe," "My True Love," and "Marry You Again."
Listeners can hear songs from "So Real" when Rabun and The Stanley
Baird Group perform Monday at the Durham School of the Arts.
Her songs are expressions of love and hope. "So Real" was the first
tune she wrote, several years before planning began for this recording.
"That was a love song for my husband," she said. She calls "Just
Believe" a message of hope that came during album production. "Marry You
Again" also is a love song to her husband. "One night my husband and
I were talking, and I said, I could marry you again," Rabun said,
"and my son said he was going to throw up," she laughed. Rabun and
her friend Felicia Wright (who also sings background vocals on this CD) and
Chris Evans got together and put the song together, she said.
"My True Love" reflects the strong communication the members of The
Stanley Baird Group share, Rabun said. Baird wrote the tune. "He loves to
just play, and one day he said, literally, Learn this, and the band learned it
live," she said. She told Baird, "there are words to that song. He
said, Write them." Rabun took Baird up on the challenge and provided the
lyrics to Baird's upbeat tune.
Rabun's major influence is Gladys Knight ("she's my idol"), and
she admires Lizz Wright and Dianne Reeves. She is a graduate of the Northside
School of the Arts in Atlanta, where she said the teachers stressed versatility,
that "you have to be able to adapt and adjust and deliver," she
said.
The eclecticism of her career reflects that training, she said. "I like to
think I can do anything from country to spirituals," Rabun said. On her CD
she sings with a relaxed, rich voice, but in her theatrical work she can be
more of a belter (for a sample, check out the song from "Drift" on
YouTube). She said the music of the Stanley Baird Group encompasses both smooth
and straight-ahead jazz, and she feels comfortable in both.
Rabun has been singing and touring with the Baird group for four years. She and
Baird went to the same church, and one day after the service, "he
came up to me and said, I think you have a very unique voice and I want you to
sing for me." She began singing on occasion with the band, and eventually
signed on permanently.
She likens their musical relationship to that of the late saxophonist Julian "Cannonball" Adderley and vocalist Nancy Wilson. Wilson sang
with Adderley's group, and Adderley encouraged Wilson to launch her singing
career. Baird, Rabun said, "is my mentor." In addition to her
acting and singing, she also is a corporate attorney, a position that requires
her to be "very methodical and logical." Jazz, while it has structure,
requires musicians to go with the flow. Baird "was a great teacher
in helping me do that," she said.
Five of the compositions on the disc were "in the studio" takes
(rather than being tracked separately): "Dreaming," "Only in My
Mind," "Say My Name," My True Love" and "I Will Be
Loved Tonight." "That's the wonderful thing about playing with the
band," Rabun said. In jazz "you talk to each other through your
instruments. When you can have a relationship with the instruments … and almost
dance with them, it becomes surreal what can come out of it."

Yolanda Rabun’s “So Real”
From the slick designer CD
cover to the very last track, you’ll be so impressed with the richness of the
project. Put together with love and feelings, each and every moment spent
listening brings a smile to your face and you just can’t stop singing your
favorites.
Yolanda, (I call her Yo); Rabun is no flash in the pan or overnight success.
Long before she graced the front of the stage with the Stanley Baird Group,
Yolanda was sharing her voice with the masses. As a youth, she took the
stage for a performance to sing for a President of the United States.
You’ll find that kind of enthusiasm laced amongst the ballads and the jams.
Yes, I said jams. ”Dreaming” has a groove that is memorable to say the
least, with it’s body moving and foot tapping sensuous sound from the back
up band to Yolanda’s clear booming highs and lows. From cut one, the title
track “So Real” to “Set for Life” it just get better and better. There’s
something on “So Real” for everyone to love. It’s a must hear, got to have,
piece of work. “Just Believe”, “The Good Wife” and more, are a testament
to what hard work will do for you.
“So Real”, released the last week in June, should be on every jazz and
R & B station in the country. Not only is she a polished singer, trained,
and a beautiful lady, she comes with the band. That’s a band that she has
spent several years touring with and handling the lead vocals duty for.
“The Stanley Baird Group”
already known for hot and sizzling jazz sets and international touring for the
USO backs or better yet accompanies her on the CD and will be the band on stage
when she performs live. It’s a family and one it’s children is spreading her
wings for the world to take notice. Go head Yo, it’s your show now, so blow the
roof off!
We will keep this CD on our playlist for some time to come…
